JYR 7048 Single Back Professional 5-String Violin

The #7048 5-string violin I received from JYR Music is a beautiful instrument with a great sound. I have ordered other violins from them and the workmanship and attention to detail is evident in every instrument. Their luthiers are top-notch, and their customer service is excellent. I also have one of their best violins which has a full-bodied sound with tonewoods aged 30+ years. JYR is serious about producing high quality violins with a broad range of choices including violins, violas and cellos and options for various grades of tonewoods.

I worked with Julie of JYR to build a 5-string with a slightly wider neck to more easily accommodate fingering with more room between strings. Many dealers offer only a standard width neck with no other options and usually a higher cost. JYR is happy to build your violin to your specifications if you would like a wider neck at the nut. You could also select tonewoods that have been aged and seasoned for longer periods. The #7048 uses wood aged at least 10 years.

On violins and violas, the C-string is always a challenge to get a robust sound. This JYR 5-string has an excellent sounding C-string (using a Piastro Pirazzi Green C-string) and balanced sound over the other four strings. You will probably want to put on your preferred set of violin strings. I’m using Thomastik Vision which sound great. The violin is still opening up through regular playing.

Some of the best fiddlers (bluegrass & fiddle music) are playing 5-strings including Michael Cleveland and others. The late Bobby Hicks and Johnny Gimble made their careers on the 5-string violin. With increasing popularity in recent years, the cost of high-quality modern 5-strings could be thousands of dollars more from other makers or companies. With JYR, their top-level 5-string is economical with aged tonewoods and very fine workmanship. JYR also has the #7058 5-string which is less than half the price of the #7048. I haven’t played those but based on my experience, I would expect it to also be a quality 5-string violin.
